Prepare for Placement Tests!
This article will help answer questions regarding our Placement Test such as, what is the placement test? How do students view progress on a placement test? How do I set up a placement test?
Whether your students are new to Dreamscape or have been playing for years, we're excited to have this feature that ensures students are learning at their correct reading level.
What is a Placement Test?
Placement tests are used to determine the reading level of a student. They are automatically assigned for new Dreamscape accounts. When a student is completing the placement test, they will answer questions of varying difficulties and be placed at a reading level based off of their answers. Our reading levels are comparable to literacy grade levels. After a students' placement test is complete, their teacher will be able to view their calculated reading level within the placement test reporting tool. Dreamscape will use this reading level to determine the difficulty of questions assigned to students as they continue to play Dreamscape.
How does the Placement Test work?
The placement test works the same way as all other passages and questions in Dreamscape, in that students must begin the question answering process by selecting the "Question" button in the game. Students will be assigned passages and questions of varying difficulties as they progress through the placement test. As students answer questions correctly, the placement test will assign them a higher reading level and thus more difficult questions and passages. If a student answers questions incorrectly, then their reading level will decrease and they will be assigned easier passages and questions. The placement test is complete when a student masters one reading level passage, but fails the next more difficult reading level questions. Students may have a reading level that is higher or lower than their grade level, depending on their results from the placement test.
Note: Students reading level is grade level equivalent
How does Placement Test Reporting work?
You will now find a new reporting tool within the educator dashboard under the 'Reports' tab! Within the placement test reporting tool, you will be able to see at which step of the placement process your students are at, and their reading level if they've finished the test.
The bar chart shows all of the players who’ve completed the placement test and their reading level results. Changing the grade level benchmark will allow teachers to see how the students compare to each other as well as the selected grade.
How do I assign Placement Tests to my students?
Every new Dreamscape player account will be automatically assigned the placement test after August 5th 2020. Existing Dreamscape player accounts will also be automatically assigned the placement test. If existing Dreamscape players are in progress of completing an assignment you've given them, the placement test will come after the assignment is finished. Please note that currently if the Dreamscape player has not started the placement test and you assign an assignment, the placement test will come before the assignment.
Can I assign a Placement Test more than once?
Not right now, but Dreamscape is adaptive, so the content they receive will adjust to their reading level and progress with them. If you think a player hasn't completed the test properly, you can manually edit their grade level on your dashboard. We will be releasing benchmarking and end of year tests in the coming year.
